New ad hits on tension between Mealer’s support of Texas’ extreme abortion ban, and the County Judge’s oversight of the public health system
HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS (Sept 20, 2022) – Today, Team Hidalgo released ‘Supports It’ – a TV spot underscoring the grave and dangerous implications of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s opponent, Alex Mealer’s, extreme anti-abortion beliefs for Harris County women, and the County’s public health system. Mealer’s support for Governor Greg Abbott’s cruel and heinous abortion ban – a law with no exceptions even in traumatic cases of rape and incest – speaks volumes of her complete disregard and disinterest in protecting the health, and safety of Harris County families.
“Contrary to what the extremist politicians will have you believe, reproductive healthcare, including safe access to abortion, is a matter of County concern,” says Toni Harrison, Hidlago campaign spokesperson. “A candidate who would risk the lives of patients, and allocate our law enforcement’s time and resources to arresting doctors and jailing healthcare professionals is the wrong choice for Harris County.”
One of the core responsibilities of the County Judge is overseeing Harris County Public Health and Harris Health System. The County owns and operates three hospitals and multiple clinics that provide essential healthcare to Harris County residents, including reproductive health services.
Judge Hidalgo has worked to improve access to reproductive healthcare for Harris County residents, even meeting with President Biden and Vice President Harris to stress the severity of Texas’ trigger law on Harris County doctors who must now contend with “breaking the law” to care for some of their patients. In contrast, purposefully barring Harris County women from accessing critical healthcare, and remaining “laser-focused on solving crucial issues,” none of which include healthcare, is Mealer’s myopic approach.
Hidalgo is committed to keeping Harris County safe and family-first, allowing residents to maintain control over their reproductive decisions. While the extremist actions of the state’s far-Right leadership have led Texas off the deep end in national rankings for health, safety, and livelihood, Hidalgo is laser-focused on keeping Harris County a place where families can live and thrive.
