Leaked Email Suggests Real-Estate Developer Dick Weekley Alone Funneled $5M in Campaign Cash to Extreme GOP Harris County Judge Candidate

HARRIS COUNTY, TEXAS – (Sep 28, 2022) – A leaked campaign fundraising email reveals Alex Mealer will receive an in-flux of more than $5 million from real-estate developer and chairman of Texans for Lawsuit Reform Dick Weekley. Weekley, well-known for funding extremist causes and candidates, gave more than $50,000 for Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election effort.

According to the email sent this week, Weekly has “personally given and raised in firm commitments over $5,000,000 out of a $6.6 million budget for the Alexandra Mealer campaign for County Judge.”

Accepting funds from a local developer – who represents groups critical of Harris County’s floodplain development regulations that are necessary for local flood prevention – runs counter to Mealer’s pledge of “good governance.” What does Weekley expect in return from Mealer for his almost single-handed funding of her campaign?

Judge Hidalgo does not accept donations from county vendors and requires every donor to certify they will not seek a contract with the County within a year. This high ethical standard is without precedent in Harris County.

Almost 8,000 individual donors have made more than 16,000 contributions to Judge Hidalgo’s campaign. While the  average donation amount of $234 is lower than the far-right GOP candidate.
